Ukraine Strikes Russian Oil Refinery Despite Trump De-escalation Pledge

Ukraine carried out overnight drone and rocket strikes on multiple Russian targets, including an oil refinery in the Krasnodar region and warehouse facilities in the Rostov area, hours after U.S. President Donald Trump called on both sides to stop attacking each other's energy infrastructure.

According to Russian regional governor Vyacheslav Fedorishchev, citing the Tass news agency, about 40 drones were shot down over the Samara region in southeastern Russia, where the attacked facility and several residential buildings were damaged. No fatalities were reported. Ukrainian sources identified the target as an oil refinery.

On Monday, Trump announced that Russia and Ukraine had agreed to refrain from striking each other's energy installations. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyj wrote on X that a de-escalatory step concerning critical infrastructure "could be a first step toward peace." Moscow issued no immediate response.

In a separate attack overnight, Ukrainian forces struck warehouse halls of e-commerce company Ozon in the southern city of Taganrog. Rostov region governor Yury Slysar said no casualties occurred, but agricultural enterprise storage facilities, residential buildings, and an educational institution were damaged.

Ukraine has waged a sustained campaign against Russia's oil industry over recent months, disrupting domestic fuel supplies at times. Russia has retaliated with targeted strikes on Ukrainian energy assets and individual petrol stations.

Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported Russian drone attacks on the Ukrainian capital overnight, saying a petrol station was hit and one person was injured in a different district, according to his Telegram channel.

Ukraine has defended itself against Russia's full-scale invasion for more than four and a half years with Western assistance, increasingly striking targets in Russia's hinterland as part of its defence strategy.
