Twint Marks 10 Years as Switzerland's Dominant Digital Payment Platform

Twint, the Swiss mobile payment service, has completed a decade of operations, transforming from a pilot project into a fixture of everyday commerce in Switzerland.

The service launched in 2016 as a Postfinance initiative before expanding nationwide following its merger with Paymit, a competing platform developed by SIX, UBS and Zurich Cantonal Bank (ZKB). At launch, cash remained commonplace: coin-operated parking meters, splitting restaurant bills by hand, and rummaging through wallets for exact change at supermarket checkouts were routine.

Today, Twint says those habits have been largely displaced by smartphone-based payments. The company describes its decade as one of "digital sovereignty and Swiss payment innovation."

More than 6 million people now use the app. In 2025 alone, Twint processed 901 million transactions. Acceptance is broad: roughly 81% of stationary retail outlets and 86% of online shops in Switzerland honor Twint payments. Public transport stands out as a particular stronghold — approximately 88 million Twint transactions were made on Swiss public transit in 2025 alone.

Twint remains owned by a consortium of Switzerland's largest banks, including UBS, Raiffeisen, Postfinance, ZKB and BCV, as well as exchange operator SIX and payment processor Worldline.
