Photronics details advanced node strategy at Midwest IDEAS conference

Photronics Inc. outlined its strategy for advanced semiconductor nodes during the 17th Annual Midwest IDEAS Conference on August 27, 2026, projecting growth through fiscal 2027 while detailing rising costs and facility investments.

The company, which operates 11 cleanroom facilities globally and employs about 2,000 people, reported trailing 12-month revenue of $850 million to $900 million. Semiconductor revenue accounts for roughly 75% of the total, with displays contributing the remaining 25%. Geographic revenue is heavily weighted toward Asia at approximately 80%, while the United States represents 17% to 19% and is expected to expand.

Photronics holds a global photomask market share of about 10%, with a stronger position in the display segment at roughly 28%. Gross margin improved to 33% in the most recent quarter, up from historical ranges of 20% to the mid-20s. The company’s cash position stands at $673 million, including $504 million in restricted cash tied to joint ventures in China and Taiwan, leaving approximately $165 million in unrestricted funds.

Capital expenditures are projected to remain elevated above 15% of revenue through fiscal 2027, following historically high levels near 10% of revenue. Operating cash flow has historically hovered around 35% of revenue, while free cash flow has averaged about 25%, subject to capital allocation decisions. Photronics holds a 50.01% stake in its Taiwan and China joint ventures, with roughly 70% of net income flowing to shareholders after ownership splits and tax considerations.

The cost of photomask sets rises sharply with node complexity, from about $50,000 per set at 90 nanometers to between $10 million and $20 million for nodes at 5 nanometers or below. Mask counts per set increase from around 25 at 90nm to 70-80 at 14nm. Management highlighted facility upgrades to support advanced nodes, including a Texas site transitioning from 180/130nm to 65nm within one to two months, and a Boise facility expanding capacity for 7nm to 4nm production, though 4nm is not yet revenue-generating.

Korea operations are scaling from 40nm mass production to 8nm, with completion expected in about a year. Taiwan hosts three facilities focused on semiconductors, while China operates two sites serving both semiconductors and displays. In displays, approximately 85% of revenue comes from high-end products, and the company claims to be the first to supply Generation 8.6 AMOLED photomasks.

Photronics is pursuing a cautious multi-year plan for EUV mask production, with estimated program costs near $300 million. Only one client currently requests EUV masks, and the investment cycle is expected to span at least five years. For the upcoming quarter, management guided for flat to slightly higher revenue and stable gross margins.
