India’s benchmark Nifty 50 index closed Monday with a 0.14% decline, as losses in fast-moving consumer goods, healthcare and consumer durables offset gains in metals and steel.
The broader BSE Sensex 30 fell 0.22%, reflecting a mixed session across sectors. Implied volatility, as measured by the India VIX, increased 2.72% to 11.50, signaling a modest pickup in market risk perception.
Advancing issues trailed decliners on the National Stock Exchange, with 1,381 stocks falling against 1,239 gainers and 44 unchanged. On the Bombay Stock Exchange, 2,239 issues declined while 1,916 advanced and 207 ended flat.
Among the Nifty 50’s top performers, Hindalco Industries rose 1.89% to 1,053.50, JSW Steel added 1.72% to 1,316.00 and Dr Reddy’s Laboratories gained 1.38% to 1,190.90. The index’s laggards included SBI Life Insurance, which fell 1.62% to 1,763.90, Bajaj Finance, down 1.47% to 1,078.90, and Bajaj Finserv, which declined 1.40% to 2,004.00.
In the BSE Sensex 30, Tata Steel led gainers with a 1.86% advance to 186.00, followed by IndusInd Bank and HCL Technologies, each up 1.30% to 1,017.20 and 1,321.00 respectively. Adani Port and Special Economic Zone was among the laggards, falling 1.30% to 1,675.00, alongside Bajaj Finance and Bajaj Finserv, which shed 1.26% and 1.22% respectively.
Commodity prices showed divergence, with gold futures up 0.42% at $4,700.47 per troy ounce and Brent crude down 1.89% at $90.92 per barrel. The U.S. dollar index rose 0.17% to 98.90, while the USD/INR pair strengthened 0.08% to 95.77.
