Canada’s Department of Finance said it has removed seafood and fish products from its list of retaliatory tariffs on U.S. imports following industry feedback, narrowing the scope of countermeasures announced earlier this week.
The adjustment comes after the U.S. imposed 50% tariffs on Canadian goods over the weekend. Ottawa said it will match Washington’s latest duties dollar-for-dollar, maintaining a reciprocal stance while easing pressure on specific sectors. The revised tariff list will take effect on September 8.
In a statement posted on social media platform X, the Department of Finance said the changes were made to mitigate economic harm, noting that it continues to assess the impact of U.S. measures on targeted Canadian industries. The initial counter-tariff package covered roughly $20 billion of U.S. products, though the updated list was not disclosed in detail.
The latest move follows a day of coordinated announcements between the two governments, with Canada’s adjustment signaling a willingness to calibrate its response while preserving retaliatory leverage.
