Brazil's Lower House Approves Pacheco for TCU Seat

The Chamber of Deputies approved the nomination of Senator Rodrigo Pacheco to the Tribunal de Contas da União (TCU), Brazil's Federal Court of Accounts, on Wednesday, voting 404 in favor and 61 against.

The vote came one day after the Senate endorsed Pacheco's appointment, clearing the way for him to assume the seat vacated by the retirement of Minister Bruno Dantas.

Pacheco, a lawyer and member of the Socialist Party of Minas Gerais, previously served as a federal deputy, president of the Senate, and president of the National Congress. Davi Alcolumbre, current president of the Senate from União of Amazonas, had advocated for Pacheco to receive a nomination to the Supremo Tribunal Federal, but President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva did not pursue that option.

Lula had publicly urged Pacheco to run for governor of Minas Gerais in October's elections, but Pacheco ultimately chose not to seek elected office that cycle.
