U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent will host a press conference on Monday to outline a new plan targeting Iran, including what he described as the "toughest sanctions in history."
In an interview with CNBC, Bessent stated the measures aim to "curtail Iran's ability to take action through proxies" and ultimately "collapse this regime." The planned actions include a "coordinated economic isolation" of Iran, with enforcement measures threatened against countries continuing to conduct business with Tehran.
Bessent did not provide specifics on timing or scope but emphasized that the U.S. seeks to pressure Iran through economic means. He also acknowledged ongoing discussions with allies, including China, though he suggested some conversations are better kept private. Bessent expressed confidence that all nations, including China, share an interest in reopening the Strait of Hormuz, a critical shipping corridor.
