Petrobras expects a delicate oil sample from its recent Morpho well discovery in the Foz do Amazonas Basin to arrive in Rio de Janeiro within three weeks, following a specialized logistics operation. The sample, described as highly valuable, will undergo analysis at the company's Cenpes research center to determine fluid properties, contaminants, and thermodynamic characteristics.
The hydrocarbon discovery at the Morpho well was announced on August 14, 2026, according to Fabio Passarelli, Petrobras' General Manager of Ultra-deep Waters. The sample is being transported by truck under heightened security measures to prevent loss of the critical material, which Passarelli stated is irreplaceable.
Analysis will take place in Cenpes' PVT laboratory, which conducts pressure, volume, and temperature surveys alongside fluid identification and contaminant testing. Passarelli emphasized the technological sophistication of the facility, noting it plays a central role in characterizing new oil discoveries.
The pre-salt layer currently accounts for over 80% of Brazil's oil production, with Passarelli estimating its productive lifespan at approximately 50 years. Petrobras plans to connect new wells to existing infrastructure in fields such as Búzios, Sépia, and Atapu, targeting undrained or less-drained reservoir regions to extend field longevity and reduce production decline rates.
The company also outlined its Hisep subsea processing project for the Mero 3 field, with testing scheduled to begin in 2028, technology qualification in 2029, and first oil expected the same year. Petrobras projects its reserves will enter a decline trajectory starting in 2034, underscoring the importance of new discoveries and enhanced recovery techniques.
