NASA’s Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope, valued at $4.3 billion, is set for launch on Aug. 30, 2026, aboard a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket from Cape Canaveral, Florida. The mission is designed to conduct wide-field infrared surveys to study dark energy, exoplanets and cosmic structure.
The telescope will operate from a stable orbit approximately 1.6 million kilometers from Earth, with science observations expected to begin by December 2026. The first images from the mission are anticipated in 2027, following a testing phase of roughly three months after the spacecraft reaches its destination and deploys its instruments.
The Roman Space Telescope’s wide-field camera is expected to cover an area 100 times larger than that of the Hubble Space Telescope, despite featuring a mirror of similar size. NASA projects that Roman will map the sky up to 1,000 times faster than Hubble, enabling deeper and broader astronomical surveys. The mission has an operational lifespan of five to ten years.
Kristen McQuinn, head of the Roman mission office at the Space Telescope Science Institute, highlighted the telescope’s potential to address fundamental questions in physics. “There may be something fundamentally missing from physics as we understand it, and Roman has the potential to shed light on that,” she stated.
The project, conceived in the early 2010s, faced cancellation attempts during the first Trump administration in 2018 and saw funding omitted in early 2025 budget proposals before securing congressional approval for continued development.
