Citi has raised its price target on Toyota Motor Corp. shares, citing an improved outlook for the company’s RAV4 SUV and stronger-than-expected demand for hybrid vehicles.
The U.S. investment bank upgraded Toyota to a "buy" rating from "neutral," lifting its target price to ¥2,500 from ¥2,200. The revision follows recent sales data showing robust demand for the RAV4, Toyota’s best-selling model globally, as well as a rebound in hybrid vehicle adoption amid rising fuel prices.
Analysts at Citi highlighted the RAV4’s market-leading position in the compact SUV segment, noting that its strong performance has been a key driver of Toyota’s recent earnings growth. The company’s hybrid models, including the RAV4 Hybrid, have also gained traction as consumers seek more fuel-efficient alternatives in a high-cost environment.
Toyota’s stock rose 1.2% in early trading in Tokyo, outperforming the broader Nikkei 225 index. The upgrade reflects growing confidence in Toyota’s ability to sustain revenue growth amid shifting consumer preferences and competitive pricing pressures in the automotive sector.
Citi’s revised target implies a potential upside of approximately 15% from current levels, based on the bank’s valuation model. The firm’s outlook aligns with broader industry trends, where hybrid and electric vehicles are expected to play an increasingly central role in automakers’ product strategies.
