The Orange County District Attorney's Office has unveiled a $100 million claims program to support more than 50,000 residents evacuated in May following a chemical incident at the GKN Aerospace factory in California.
The announcement, made on Monday, follows the conclusion of a criminal investigation into the incident at the plant, which produces aircraft windows. The district attorney's office stated it is negotiating a formal safety plan and independent monitoring framework with the facility's owner, Melrose Industries, ahead of the targeted September 28 resumption of full manufacturing operations.
Authorities confirmed that residents were displaced from their homes in May due to the chemical release. The claims program is designed to provide financial assistance to those affected by the evacuation while regulatory and safety measures are finalized.
