3D Systems (NYSE: DDD) has entered a cooperative research and development agreement with Savannah River National Laboratory (SRNL) to advance additive manufacturing technologies for nuclear energy infrastructure.
The collaboration, centered at SRNL’s Advanced Manufacturing Collaborative in South Carolina, will target materials development, equipment enhancements and AI-enabled process optimization. Specific focus areas include high-temperature nickel-based superalloys and radiation-tolerant materials used in heat exchangers, reactor internals, pumps and valves.
The agreement formalizes joint efforts in manufacturing systems, cybersecurity and workforce development, with training programs designed for additive manufacturing scientists, engineers and technicians. SRNL is managed by Battelle Savannah River Alliance under the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Environmental Management.
The partnership aligns with projected growth in small modular reactor (SMR) capacity, which the International Energy Agency estimates could reach 40 gigawatts by 2050 under current policies. In accelerated scenarios, SMR capacity could rise to 120 gigawatts.
Jeff Graves, president and CEO of 3D Systems, said the agreement underscores the role of advanced 3D printing materials and technologies in industrial markets, particularly energy and national security.
3D Systems closed at $3.30 on August 26, up 2.48%, and was at $3.31 in after-hours trading on August 26, up 0.30%.
