Citigroup economists anticipate the U.S. Federal Reserve will maintain its benchmark interest rate at the September policy meeting following the latest inflation data.

The outlook reflects a shift in expectations after recent consumer and producer price reports showed cooling price pressures, reducing urgency for further tightening. Citi’s rate strategists, led by Veronica Clark, noted that the softer inflation trajectory aligns with a scenario where the Fed opts for a pause to assess the cumulative impact of prior rate hikes.

The Federal Reserve has raised rates by 525 basis points since March 2022, bringing the federal funds rate to a 22-year high of 5.25%-5.50%. While inflation has eased from its 2022 peak, it remains above the central bank’s 2% target, leaving policymakers cautious about declaring victory. Recent data, including the July Consumer Price Index and Producer Price Index, suggested moderating inflationary trends, though officials have emphasized the need for sustained progress.

Market pricing had previously implied a higher probability of a September rate hike, but Citi’s assessment suggests a growing consensus that the Fed may hold rates steady. The decision will hinge on incoming economic indicators, particularly labor market conditions and services inflation, which have proven stickier than goods inflation.

The Fed’s next policy meeting is scheduled for September 19-20, with a decision expected on September 20. Traders will closely monitor Fed Chair Jerome Powell’s remarks at the Jackson Hole Economic Symposium later this month for further signals on the central bank’s policy trajectory.
