Swiss Re shares drop 3.6% after Monte Carlo risk warning

Swiss Re AG’s stock slipped 3.6% on Monday, closing at CHF 137.70. The decline was not tied to a company‑specific development but to remarks made at the annual Monte Carlo gathering of reinsurers, where the firm warned of expanding risks in the reinsurance market.

At a media briefing during the "Rendez‑Vous de Septembre" conference – running from Saturday through Wednesday – Urs Baertschi, head of Swiss Re’s property‑and‑casualty reinsurance division, said global demand for coverage is rising as the risk landscape evolves and interconnections between hazards increase.

Swiss Re and peers such as Munich Re and their primary insurers are confronting a more complex market environment, with reinsurance pricing under continued pressure. The sector sees opportunities from the artificial‑intelligence boom and the energy transition, but also heightened exposure to natural‑catastrophe losses.

The firm highlighted the 2025 California wildfires, which caused roughly $54 billion in economic damage and resulted in $40 billion of insured losses – the costliest event of its type. Swiss Re notes that insured wildfire losses have risen 8%‑11% per year over recent decades, a trend it expects to continue as more people settle in fire‑prone regions.

Investors are now watching whether the stock will recover on Tuesday or extend the Monday slip. Since June, the share price has been on an upward trajectory, reaching its highest level since November 2025 in the prior week.

Swiss Re remains a favorite among dividend‑focused investors. Although the company has not increased its payout every year over the past 25 years, its dividend yield has consistently stayed above 4%, currently measured at 4.4%.
