Swiss finance sector and police launch joint campaign against payment fraud

SwissDebitPay, the Swiss Payment Association and the Swiss Bankers Association have joined forces with police to launch a new awareness campaign called Pay Attent!on. The campaign builds on existing initiatives such as Card Security, EBAS (eBanking - aber sicher!) and various Swiss crime prevention programmes, pooling resources, unifying communication and increasing national presence.

Organisers stress that cashless payment methods – debit and credit cards, e‑banking and Twint – are technically secure, but that technical measures alone cannot stop fraud because the greatest vulnerability lies with users. Fraudsters increasingly use professional phishing, scamming, identity misuse and social engineering to exploit human weaknesses.

"Through clever manipulation fraudsters get victims to disclose access codes, passwords or other confidential information or to trigger payments themselves. Once data are shared or payments triggered, damage can hardly be prevented or reversed," the association said. Pay Attent!on began its work on Tuesday.
