OpenAI released an open letter titled “A Call to Action on Cyber Defense” on September 7, 2026, urging a coordinated effort to strengthen digital security using artificial intelligence. The letter, authored by CEO Greg Brockman, warns that existing security practices are insufficient and that a limited window exists to improve defenses.
The initiative calls on cybersecurity firms to continuously test against advanced threats, integrate AI into security products, collaborate across technology ecosystems, provide practical support to critical‑infrastructure operators, and share threat intelligence and validated response playbooks.
Palo Alto Networks, Mate Security and ServiceNow have signed the letter, signaling industry support. Mate Security highlighted its “Gamebooks” framework, which structures investigations to enable AI agents to reason, pivot and act within predefined procedures, forming an open foundation for agentic cyber defense.
