VolitionRx Limited said its Nu.Q NETs H3.1 biomarker can predict 28-day mortality and the need for renal replacement therapy in sepsis patients, according to a study published in Critical Care Medicine.
The secondary analysis of the SISPCT randomized clinical trial found elevated H3.1 nucleosome levels in septic shock patients, correlating with acute kidney injury severity. An accompanying editorial in the same journal highlighted the biomarker’s potential to identify patients with NET-mediated organ injury.
Professor Michael Bauer, Chair of Anesthesiology and Intensive Care Medicine at Jena University Hospital and a co-author, said the findings establish H3.1 nucleosomes as a marker of organ dysfunction in sepsis, particularly for early mortality and renal replacement therapy needs.
VolitionRx is pursuing commercial discussions with diagnostic companies while citing a $2.8 billion addressable market for the low-cost test, which targets diseases associated with NETosis. The company did not disclose financial terms of any ongoing talks.
Global sepsis statistics cited in the research note approximately 166 million cases worldwide in 2021, resulting in 21.4 million deaths. Among survivors, 33% die within one year and 40% are readmitted within 90 days of discharge.
