Hyperfine Inc. said its Swoop portable MRI system has completed more than 3,000 brain scans in outpatient neurology clinics within its first year of commercial availability.
The milestone was highlighted in a study published in the Journal of Neuroimaging, which assessed the device’s performance in real-world settings. The NEURO PMR study, a prospective multicenter evaluation, compared portable MRI scans with high-field MRI results and found a 92% concordance in identifying structural abnormalities in blinded neuroradiology reviews. Concordance with clinical information reached 98%.
Patient experience data indicated a four-to-one preference for the portable MRI over high-field systems, citing factors such as comfort, reduced anxiety, lower noise levels, and an overall better experience. The study was conducted at the DENT Neurologic Institute in Guilford, Connecticut, under the leadership of Laszlo Mechtler, president of the institute and principal investigator of the NEURO PMR study.
Hyperfine’s Swoop system is an ultra-low-field MRI device cleared by the FDA for brain imaging across all age groups. It operates in standard exam rooms without specialized shielding, runs on standard electrical power, and can be operated by trained clinical staff. The company said the system has been adopted across general neurology, headache clinics, memory centers, pediatric neurology, concierge medicine, and longevity clinics for neurological evaluation and disease monitoring.
Chi Nguyen, Hyperfine’s senior vice president of office and community business, noted that the 3,000 scans reflect real-world adoption and workflow integration. The device’s portability and ease of use have enabled neurologists to obtain diagnostic information more quickly while improving patient comfort and care efficiency.
