U.S. equities closed higher on Tuesday, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average rising 0.30% to 53,577.40, while the S&P 500 added 0.32% to 7,677.28 and the Nasdaq Composite gained 0.66%.
Advancing issues outnumbered decliners by a margin of 1,527 to 1,172 on the New York Stock Exchange, with 104 stocks unchanged. The CBOE Volatility Index fell 2.52% to 15.45, reflecting reduced market anxiety.
Among Dow components, Merck led gainers with a 3.84% rise to $156.45, followed by Goldman Sachs at $1,058.88 (+2.18%) and NVIDIA at $213.00 (+2.17%). Decliners included Nike, down 3.12% to $39.48, McDonald’s at $268.10 (-1.63%) and Salesforce at $205.69 (-1.61%).
The S&P 500 saw Moderna surge 14.36% to $158.83, Super Micro Computer climb 9.35% to $38.46 and CDW gain 7.74% to $142.09. On the downside, Albemarle fell 5.89% to $133.18, LyondellBasell dropped 4.06% to $62.55 and Dow Inc declined 4.04% to $30.17.
The Nasdaq Composite featured outsized moves, with Xiao I Corp ADR jumping 186.28% to $1.31, Netcapital up 126.83% to $0.58 and CID HoldCo gaining 124.28% to $3.88. Among the worst performers, Flash Sports & Media Holdings fell 56.54% to $0.10, OSRH Holdings dropped 53.40% to $0.12 and Future Vision II Acquisition slid 52.47% to $9.43.
In commodities, gold futures for December delivery rose 0.47% to $4,719.95 per troy ounce, while WTI crude for October delivery fell 5.14% to $80.64 per barrel. Brent crude for November delivery declined 5.58% to $85.49 per barrel.
The U.S. dollar index futures were down 0.11% at 98.82, with the EUR/USD pair largely unchanged at 1.17 and USD/JPY rising 0.06% to 159.20. European benchmarks were mixed, with the FTSE 100 down 0.06% and the DAX off 0.08%, while Japan’s Nikkei 225 gained 0.61%.
