Taiwan stocks ended lower on Monday, with the benchmark Taiwan Weighted Index declining 1.00% as losses in oil, gas, electricity and plastics sectors outweighed gains in select technology shares.
Declining issues outnumbered advancers by 664 to 328, with 128 stocks unchanged. The index’s retreat reflected broad-based weakness across energy-related sectors, which offset modest gains in some semiconductor names.
Among the top gainers, Mospec Semiconductor Corp surged 9.97% to close at NT$53.50, while Lite-On Technology Corp added 9.96% to reach NT$287.00, marking a record high. HannsTouch Solution Inc also advanced 9.96% to NT$12.70. However, these gains were not sufficient to offset the broader market downturn.
The steepest declines were seen in Lintes Technology Co Ltd, which fell 9.93% to NT$403.50, BizLink Holding Inc, which dropped 9.89% to NT$2,050.00, and Regal Holding Co Ltd, which slid 9.89% to NT$27.80.
Energy markets mirrored the equity weakness, with WTI crude oil futures for October delivery down 1.69% at $85.59 per barrel and Brent crude for November delivery down 1.49% at $91.29 per barrel. Gold futures for December delivery, however, edged 0.35% higher to $4,697.20 per troy ounce.
The Taiwan dollar strengthened marginally against the U.S. dollar, with the USD/TWD pair retreating 0.05% to 31.82. The U.S. Dollar Index futures fell 0.03% to 98.76.
