Japanese equities closed lower on Monday as the benchmark Nikkei 225 index fell 0.69% to 47,312.81, reflecting broad-based weakness across several sectors.
Declines in the Nikkei 500 Pulp & Paper, Nikkei 500 Air Transport and Nikkei 500 Communications subindices weighed on sentiment, while advancing issues outnumbered decliners by 2,052 to 1,439 on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, with 265 stocks unchanged.
The Nikkei 225’s implied volatility for options, a measure of market uncertainty, decreased 4.38% to 28.38, while the USD/JPY pair edged up 0.01% to 159.00 and the EUR/JPY rose 0.04% to 185.71. US dollar futures, as tracked by the Dollar Index, fell 0.05% to 98.78.
Among the top gainers, Sumitomo Metal Mining surged 6.64% to 11,475 yen, Hitachi Construction Machinery advanced 6.40% to 6,005 yen and Komatsu rose 4.94% to 7,414 yen. Conversely, Kioxia Holdings led decliners with a 6.24% drop to 50,930 yen, followed by Mercari’s 5.71% fall to 4,474 yen and SoftBank Group’s 5.33% decline to 4,975 yen.
Commodities also reflected the day’s risk-off tone, with October crude oil futures down 2.19% at $85.15 per barrel and November Brent crude falling 1.89% to $90.92. December gold futures, however, gained 0.64% to $4,710.34 per troy ounce.
