SoftBank Group Corp. announced plans to issue 1 trillion yen ($6.3 billion) in retail bonds, marking the largest such offering by a Japanese issuer. The seven-year bonds, with an indicative coupon range of 4.3% to 4.9%, are intended to fund the company’s accelerating investments in artificial intelligence, including commitments to OpenAI.
The offering period runs from September 7 to September 16, with pricing scheduled for September 4 and issuance set for September 17. The bonds will mature on September 16, 2033. The proceeds will support SoftBank’s expanding AI infrastructure, which includes data center development to meet surging demand for computing capacity.
SoftBank’s Tokyo-listed shares fell 2.6% to 5,118 yen following the announcement. The company has previously explored alternative financing options, including a margin loan backed by its stake in OpenAI, as it ramps up spending on AI-related ventures.
