Seagate’s Chairman Dave emphasized the growing importance of data retention amid artificial intelligence adoption at the Six Five Summit: AI Unleashed 2026, held on August 25, 2026. Speaking at the event, Dave noted that 80% of the world’s data is currently stored on hard drives in data centers, a figure that continues to expand rapidly.
The company highlighted a survey indicating that 55% of CIOs reported financial losses due to deleting data prematurely, underscoring the opportunity costs of inadequate retention policies. Seagate’s stock has surged 389% over the past year and 89% over the last six months, reflecting investor confidence in its positioning within the AI-driven data storage market.
Dave outlined the industry’s transition from traditional cold storage to nearline and object store architectures, which balance accessibility with cost efficiency. He also pointed to advancements in storage technology, including the integration of photonics engineers and laser systems, marking a departure from conventional spinning disc solutions.
The executive stressed the need for organizations to adopt a dual approach to data management: a bottom-up strategy to educate teams on modern AI techniques and a top-down commitment to rapid adaptation amid evolving technological demands. Seagate’s strategic priorities include increasing storage density to optimize data center efficiency, enhancing data accessibility at both drive and system levels, and reinforcing data protection and sovereignty measures.
The company’s focus aligns with broader industry trends, where unstructured data utility is driven by improved geographic access, automated data processing tools, and metadata-driven algorithms that determine data relevance.
