Qualcomm Inc. has secured a renewed global patent licensing agreement with Apple Inc., extending the partnership through April 2027 and helping mitigate concerns over revenue stability. The deal, announced on September 24, 2026, follows Apple’s strategic shift toward in-house chip production, reducing its reliance on Qualcomm’s hardware components.
Qualcomm shares rose by 0.2% on the day of the announcement, offsetting earlier losses in the Nasdaq 100 index. The agreement follows a 2017 lawsuit by Apple, which accused Qualcomm of imposing excessive royalties, sparking a two-year legal dispute. The dispute concluded in 2019 with a settlement that formalized the existing licensing terms.
The deal underscores Qualcomm’s enduring role in Apple’s supply chain, despite the tech giant’s efforts to develop its own cellular chips, such as its in-house ‘C1’ technology. While Apple has acquired Intel’s modem business and accelerated its hardware independence, Qualcomm retains critical patents essential for modern cellular connectivity, ensuring continued revenue from intellectual property fees.
John Han, Executive Vice President and General Manager of Qualcomm Technology Licensing, expressed satisfaction with the extension, stating that the partnership remains mutually beneficial. The agreement’s longevity reflects both companies’ commitment to sustaining a collaborative relationship amid evolving industry dynamics.
