John Deere’s autonomous orchard sprayer unit GUSS Automation plans to integrate Ouster Inc.’s Rev8 OS0 digital LiDAR sensors into its next-generation fleet, the company announced. The sensors will provide 3D point cloud data to support navigation and obstacle detection in orchards and vineyards, where GPS precision is insufficient for dense vegetation and terrain contours.
The ultra-wide field of view of the OS0 sensors is designed to map tree trunks, crop rows, and terrain contours, enabling reliable operation in environments with dust, spray mist, and dense foliage. GUSS currently markets two autonomous orchard machines—the Orchard GUSS and Mini GUSS—both used for permanent crop spraying operations.
The integration aims to enhance the autonomy of GUSS’s machines, allowing a single operator to monitor up to eight autonomous units simultaneously via a laptop. The technology targets high-value crop and vineyard environments where centimeter-level precision is required for efficient operations.
GUSS Automation is a subsidiary of John Deere, operating within the company’s high-value crop autonomy portfolio. The announcement follows John Deere’s broader push into autonomous agricultural solutions, leveraging advanced sensing and perception technologies to address challenges in dense orchard environments.
