Five Below (FIVE) shares have surged nearly 70% over the past year, trading around $244 — roughly 5% below their 52-week high — as the discount retailer’s turnaround strategy gains momentum ahead of its Goldman Sachs Global Consumer and Retail Conference presentation.
Chief Executive Officer Winnie Park and Chief Financial Officer Dan Sullivan told investors the company has completed a broad reset over the past two years, launching a January 2025 initiative to become "America's greatest little toy store." The effort has produced five consecutive quarters of double-digit comparable store growth.
"This business is getting stronger here as we continue," Sullivan said. "While we're super proud of what we've done to get here, we're actually more convicted on what lies in front of us to deliver sustainable growth for the business."
Five Below now operates just shy of 2,000 stores and sees a long-term U.S. runway of more than 3,500 locations. The company is moving aggressively into new markets, opening nine stores in the Pacific Northwest after securing sites left vacant by Party City closures; each location set a grand-opening record. New-store productivity is tracking in the upper 90th percentile.
The retailer's pricing architecture centers on $1 through $5 items, which account for roughly 80% of its assortment, with higher-tier price points at $7, $10, $15, $20 and $25 filling out the remainder. Park emphasized Five Below's unique positioning, calling it "one of one" in the market.
On capital allocation, Sullivan noted that more than 75% of capital deployed in 2024 was directed toward growth investments. The company holds a $600 million share repurchase authorization and completed approximately $60 million in buybacks during the second quarter under a prior mandate. Twenty analysts have recently revised earnings estimates upward for the upcoming period.
Headwinds remain. Diesel prices sit near $6 a gallon, up from roughly $3.50 to $3.75 a year earlier, weighing on logistics costs. Sullivan projected those fuel cost comparisons would begin to ease by late spring 2025, with further relief expected through 2026 and 2027.
Tariff exposure under Section 301 and the IEEPA framework also entered the discussion. "Never waste a crisis would be my motto for the tariff," Park said, declining to provide specific guidance but signaling the company is navigating the environment proactively.
Marketing spend is running about 25 basis points higher year over year, and unit growth is pacing in the high-single-digit range, or 7% to 9%. Retail remodeling costs run approximately $40,000 to $45,000 per store.
Five Below's current ratio stands at 2.22, and InvestingPro assigned the company a financial health score of 3.18 out of 5. The stock was trading at $249.59, up $4.99 or 2.04%, in early session activity, with after-hours quoting near $250.01.
