EyePoint Pharmaceuticals Inc. said on Friday its experimental drug DURAVYU failed to meet the primary endpoint in a late-stage trial evaluating its treatment for wet age-related macular degeneration (AMD).
The company disclosed that the phase 3 trial, which assessed the efficacy of DURAVYU compared to standard-of-care therapy, did not achieve the predefined statistical significance for the primary endpoint. EyePoint did not provide further details on the trial’s outcomes or next steps in its statement.
Wet AMD is a leading cause of vision loss in older adults, characterized by abnormal blood vessel growth in the retina. Current treatments, primarily anti-VEGF therapies, require frequent injections, creating demand for longer-acting alternatives.
EyePoint, a biopharmaceutical company focused on ophthalmology, has been developing DURAVYU as a potential extended-duration treatment for the condition. The failure to meet the primary endpoint in the trial represents a setback for the company’s pipeline and its efforts to address unmet needs in retinal disease management.
