Saudi Arabia’s sovereign wealth fund, the Public Investment Fund (PIF), reported a 4.2% decline in shareholder returns for 2024, citing weaker asset valuations as the primary factor.
The fund’s total shareholder returns amounted to $16.1 billion in 2024, down from $16.8 billion in the prior year. The PIF attributed the decrease to reduced market valuations across its investment portfolio, which includes domestic and international assets.
The fund did not provide a breakdown of the asset classes driving the decline, though its holdings span equities, real estate, private equity, and infrastructure projects. The PIF has been a key vehicle for Saudi Arabia’s economic diversification strategy, deploying capital domestically to support Vision 2030 initiatives.
The decline follows a period of strong growth in shareholder returns, with the PIF reporting a 12.5% increase in 2023. The fund’s assets under management have expanded significantly in recent years, reaching over $900 billion in 2024, according to official disclosures.
The PIF’s performance is closely monitored as a barometer of Saudi Arabia’s economic health and its ability to generate returns amid volatile global markets.
