Isabel Schnabel, a member of the European Central Bank’s executive board, may depart her post ahead of schedule to take a role at the International Monetary Fund, according to a report by Handelsblatt citing government and finance sources.
Schnabel’s current term as an ECB executive board member is scheduled to conclude at the end of 2027. A departure before then would create an early vacancy on the ECB’s decision-making body, which sets monetary policy for the euro area.
If Schnabel leaves, Bundesbank President Joachim Nagel would remain Germany’s sole candidate to succeed Christine Lagarde as the next president of the ECB. Lagarde’s term is set to expire in October 2027, and the appointment process typically involves identifying national candidates for the role.
