Coherent outlined its strategy to scale artificial intelligence infrastructure through optical networking and semiconductor materials during the Six Five Summit: AI Unleashed 2026, held on August 26, 2026.
The company’s Chief Marketing Officer, Sanjai Parthasarathi, emphasized that the next phase of AI development hinges on energy-efficient optical networks rather than raw processing speed. Coherent operates more than 50 manufacturing facilities globally, including over 20 in the United States, and has expanded its indium phosphide production capacity to meet rising AI demand. The material is critical for high-performance optical components used in data center interconnects and other AI infrastructure.
Parthasarathi highlighted the company’s Multi-Rail platform, designed for amplifier and fiber cabin deployments between data centers. The platform can quadruple capacity within the same physical footprint while increasing energy consumption in a sublinear fashion relative to added capacity. This approach aligns with the industry’s shift toward a "distributed scale" model, where individual data centers lack sufficient power to support large-scale AI training workloads.
Beyond terrestrial AI infrastructure, Coherent also targets space infrastructure and satellite communications (SATCOM). The company noted that components for free-space optical communication require radiation shielding, resistance to launch shock, reliable operation in extreme conditions, and specialized tools such as telescopes and steering mirrors.
Reliability, once a differentiator in the industry, has become a baseline requirement as AI workloads demand uninterrupted performance. Coherent’s expansion in optical and materials technology positions it to address both current and emerging infrastructure needs in AI and space applications.
