Circle Internet Financial’s stock surged 6% in pre-market trading on Friday, lifting shares to $88.70 after the company announced the acquisition of IBM’s global blockchain patent portfolio.
The deal, disclosed Thursday, includes more than 680 patent families and nearly 1,000 issued patents, expanding Circle’s intellectual property in distributed ledger technology. The transaction follows the company’s broader push to strengthen its position in the digital asset ecosystem amid evolving regulatory and market conditions.
Circle also confirmed the renewal of its partnership with Coinbase for the USDC stablecoin, a move that underscores the ongoing collaboration between the two firms. The news contributed to the pre-market rally, with CRCL shares previously trading at $83.66 at the prior session’s close.
The broader market showed modest gains, with the S&P 500 up 0.3% and the Nasdaq gaining 0.5%. Bitcoin extended its recent advance, climbing above $71,600. Treasury yields declined after the U.S. Treasury expanded its bond-buyback program, while a White House meeting between President Trump and crypto industry executives added to the sector’s momentum.
Analysts at Bernstein and JPMorgan maintain bullish price targets on Circle, reflecting continued confidence in the company’s strategic positioning. The acquisition of IBM’s patents and the USDC renewal signal Circle’s intent to deepen its infrastructure role in the digital asset space as regulatory clarity improves.
