Canada’s benchmark S&P/TSX Composite declined 0.76% at the close of trade on Friday, as declines in materials and technology shares outweighed gains in waste management and cannabis stocks.
The index’s drop reflected broad weakness across the materials and clean technology sectors, while the information technology segment also weighed on performance. Advancing issues trailed decliners by a ratio of 374 to 587 on the Toronto Stock Exchange, with 67 stocks unchanged.
Gfl Environmental led gainers with a 4.64% rise to C$59.54, while Secure Waste Infrastructure added 3.67% to C$24.86, reaching five-year highs. Curaleaf Holdings climbed 3.54% to C$13.45.
Denison Mines led decliners, falling 7.10% to C$4.71, followed by NexGen Energy’s 6.96% drop to C$14.44. Energy Fuels declined 6.51% to C$20.38.
Commodities retreated as gold futures for December delivery fell 3.39% to $4,505.94 per troy ounce. October crude oil slipped 0.12% to $83.43 per barrel, while the November Brent contract declined 0.29% to $88.26 per barrel.
The Canadian dollar held steady against the U.S. dollar, trading 0.34% higher at 0.72, while the U.S. Dollar Index futures rose 0.54% to 99.63.
