Boston Scientific said on Wednesday that a cybersecurity incident detected on August 25 disrupted global operations, including systems used to process and ship customer orders.
The medical device manufacturer activated incident-response procedures and engaged third-party cybersecurity specialists to investigate and contain the threat. The company noted that the full scope and nature of the incident remain undetermined, with an ongoing investigation to assess potential impacts on its business.
Shares of Boston Scientific fell about 4% in morning trading following the announcement.
Analysts suggested the disruption could extend into the third quarter. Evercore ISI analyst Vijay Kumar cited a recent cybersecurity incident at rival Stryker, which took roughly three weeks to resolve, as a potential reference point. Kumar estimated Boston Scientific could face a 600 to 700 basis-point impact on third-quarter revenue under a similar timeline.
The incident is part of a broader wave of cyberattacks targeting the healthcare sector. Recent targets have included medical device makers Abbott Laboratories, Stryker, and Medtronic, as well as health insurer Clover Health, drugmaker Novo Nordisk, and drug-delivery equipment supplier West Pharmaceutical Services.
