U.S. urges South Korea to take stake in Westinghouse Electric

The U.S. government has proposed that South Korea acquire a stake in Westinghouse Electric, according to a report citing unidentified officials cited by the Korea Economic Daily.

One option under consideration involves South Korea taking a stake through a special-purpose vehicle co-funded by Seoul and Washington. The investment vehicle would then lead the development of new nuclear power plants in the United States, the report said.

South Korea’s government is weighing Korea Electric Power as the potential buyer of the Westinghouse stake, the report added. Financing discussions include the use of a $200 billion South Korea-U.S. strategic investment fund to support the transaction.

The proposal follows broader efforts to expand nuclear energy capacity in the U.S. and strengthen energy security ties between the two allies. Westinghouse, a key supplier of nuclear reactor technology, has been active in U.S. and international markets, with recent projects including new reactor deployments in Poland and the U.S.

South Korea’s nuclear sector, led by state-backed utilities such as Korea Electric Power, has emerged as a global leader in reactor design and construction, with a portfolio of exports to countries including the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia.
