A large-scale meta-analysis published in Annals of Surgery Open has found that Intuitive Surgical’s da Vinci robotic-assisted surgery system is associated with shorter hospital stays and faster recovery times compared to traditional laparoscopic and open surgical approaches, without increasing complication risks. Conducted by researchers from the University of Virginia, Mass General Brigham, and Intuitive, the study examined outcomes from over 14 million procedures across 32 countries spanning 14 years, focusing on 13 common benign conditions including hysterectomy, cholecystectomy, and colorectal surgery.

The analysis included 13 randomized controlled trials, 21 prospective cohort studies, 101 database studies, and 231 retrospective cohort studies. Findings showed that patients undergoing da Vinci surgery had 54% lower odds of conversion to open surgery versus laparoscopic methods. Blood transfusion requirements were 13% lower in the robotic group, and hospital stays were approximately 4 hours shorter. Patients returned to work about 2 days sooner than those treated laparoscopically, though operative times were 24 minutes longer on average.

When compared to open surgery, da Vinci procedures reduced blood transfusion risks by 69%, lowered the odds of 30-day postoperative complications by 46%, and shortened hospital stays by approximately 2 days. Patients also returned to work about 5 days sooner, though operative times were 46 minutes longer on average. No statistically significant differences were found in infection rates, readmissions, or 30-day mortality between the robotic and other surgical methods.
