German Gasoline Hits Record High, Diesel Nears Record

German fuel prices reached new record levels over the weekend, with Superbenzin E10 climbing to 2.273 euros per liter on the national daily average on Sunday, up 1.7 cents from Friday, according to the ADAC.

Diesel rose even more sharply, gaining 3.5 cents to 2.404 euros per liter, leaving it just 4.3 cents below its all-time high set in April.

Over the past two weeks, prices have risen substantially. On August 30, E10 was more than 12 cents cheaper and diesel was nearly 20 cents cheaper than on Sunday.

The price surge coincides with rising crude oil costs driven by fresh tensions in the Middle East. A planned foreign ministers' meeting between Gulf states in Oman was called off, reportedly because Iran and Oman had intended to present an agreement on the stalled Strait of Hormus dispute. Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia was forced to shut down a major pipeline following drone strikes.

Oil remains the primary driver of fuel prices, though regional and intraday variation can be significant. According to the Tankerkönig price portal, fuel in southern Germany—particularly Bavaria—remains notably cheaper, while prices in the north and especially eastern Germany are higher. Prices also swing sharply through the day: a typical midday jump leaves fuel more than 20 cents dearer shortly before, with prices falling again in the afternoon and reaching their daily low by late morning.
