US Stocks Open Lower as Rising Oil Prices Weigh on Sentiment

US stock markets opened weaker on Tuesday following the extended holiday weekend, with rising oil prices fueling renewed anxiety about future interest-rate increases. Gains in artificial-intelligence-related stocks, concentrated largely in the semiconductor sector, proved insufficient to offset the broad-based sell-off.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average, weighted toward traditional value names, fell roughly 0.9% in early trading to 52,949 points. The S&P 500 slipped 0.4% to 7,688, while the technology-heavy Nasdaq 100 declined 0.3% to 29,454 — the smallest loss among the three major indexes.

Anastasia Amoroso of Swiss asset manager Partners Group told Bloomberg TV that markets are "likely in a kind of digestion phase" as central banks worldwide undergo significant monetary-policy adjustments. She said equity prices could surrender part of their earlier gains or enter a period of consolidation.
