U.S. producer prices remained flat in May, missing expectations for a modest increase, according to data released Friday.

The Labor Department’s Producer Price Index (PPI) showed no change on a seasonally adjusted basis, compared with a 0.3% rise forecasted by economists. The core PPI, which excludes volatile food and energy prices, also fell short, rising just 0.1% against a projected 0.2% gain.

The flat reading follows a 0.5% decline in April, underscoring a broader trend of easing inflationary pressures in the U.S. economy. The PPI measures the average change over time in the selling prices received by domestic producers for their goods and services, serving as an early indicator of consumer price trends.

Analysts had anticipated a rebound in producer prices after April’s unexpected drop, driven in part by falling energy costs. However, the lack of growth in May suggests that disinflationary forces may be more entrenched than previously expected. The Federal Reserve has cited persistent inflation pressures as a key factor in maintaining higher interest rates, though recent data has shown signs of cooling.

The weaker-than-expected PPI data could reinforce expectations for a more cautious approach to monetary policy, particularly as the Fed weighs the balance between inflation control and economic growth. Market reactions were muted, with Treasury yields and the dollar holding steady following the release.
