Sana Biotech Updates Two Programs at Wells Fargo Conference

Sana Biotechnology presented progress on two lead programs ahead of clinical trials at the Wells Fargo 21st Annual Healthcare Conference on September 8, 2026.

The company’s SC451 program, a gene-modified, stem cell-derived pancreatic islet therapy for type 1 diabetes, remains on track for an investigational new drug filing expected within 2024, followed by a Phase I/II trial after clearance. Non-clinical packages and trial protocols are substantially complete, with GMP manufacturing technology transfer identified as the primary remaining critical-path item. The therapy is designed as a one-time intramuscular injection targeting approximately 10 million people worldwide. Clinical benchmarks for success include engraftment and persistence without immune rejection around one month, insulin independence with hemoglobin A1c below 7, and repeatability across multiple patients.

Sana’s second platform features SG293, an in vivo CAR T therapy targeting CD19-positive B-cell cancers. Human testing has been delayed by one to two quarters due to regulatory complications in China over the past three to six months, with initial testing planned through an investigator-initiated trial there. The company highlighted differentiation from rivals: using CD8 T-cell specificity rather than CD3-mediated entry to reduce off-target exposure, integrated DNA instead of mRNA for multi-logarithmic expansion, and separated entry and activation mechanisms to lower infusion-related toxicity and prevent T-cell exhaustion.

Addressing recent safety pauses in autoimmune CAR T studies by Novartis and Bristol Myers Squibp, Sana Chief Executive Steve Harr acknowledged the risk of immune-mediated hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis-like syndrome as a known challenge requiring early treatment. He stated, “This is all of our problem,” and cautioned that immunology holds “a distinct way of humbling us.”

Financially, Sana reported approximately $160 million in cash on hand. Based on current burn rates, the company expects sufficiency through mid-2025, with management targeting a runway extending through 2026 and beyond. Shares traded at $3.09, down 2.52%, while Wall Street price targets range from $6 to $12.
