European equities opened cautiously on Monday, with investors sidelining risk amid unresolved geopolitical tensions and ahead of key events this week. The EuroStoxx 50 fell 0.1% to 6,457.96 by midday, while the Swiss SMI slipped 0.1% to 14,442.79. The UK’s FTSE 100 bucked the trend, rising 0.2%.

Market participants cited the ongoing uncertainty surrounding the Iran conflict as a primary deterrent to broader risk appetite. Attention is also turning to Nvidia’s quarterly earnings report due on Wednesday and the Federal Reserve’s annual Jackson Hole symposium, which begins Thursday. Analysts warn these events could each introduce fresh volatility.

"This week presents a triple test for markets: Nvidia’s results, potential adjustments to U.S. sanctions on Iran, and the Jackson Hole meeting," said Jochen Stanzl, market analyst at Consors Bank. Each factor alone carries the potential to unsettle investor sentiment, he added.

The Fed’s Jackson Hole agenda, particularly Friday’s speech by Chair Kevin Warsh, is being closely watched for signals on the U.S. interest rate path, given elevated oil prices and rising bond yields. Analysts at eToro suggest the tone of Warsh’s remarks—whether focused on inflation or bond market dynamics—could shape expectations for monetary policy direction.

Among individual stocks, France’s STMicro shares slipped modestly, while ASML edged higher. The tech sector overall declined 0.5%. Travel and airline stocks outperformed, gaining roughly 1%, supported by a slight pullback in oil prices. Conversely, energy equities retreated as the sector lagged broader indices.

Investors are also monitoring oil market developments, with Brent crude holding above $80 per barrel, a level that could influence both inflation expectations and central bank policy deliberations at Jackson Hole.
