Barclays has adopted a more constructive view on European equities, citing improving valuations and a supportive macroeconomic environment as primary factors behind the shift in strategy.

The bank’s analysts highlighted that European equities are trading at historically low multiples relative to historical averages, presenting what they describe as a compelling entry point for investors. This valuation appeal comes amid signs of stabilization in the region’s economic outlook, including tentative improvements in consumer confidence and corporate earnings momentum.

Barclays also pointed to the European Central Bank’s (ECB) policy stance as a contributing factor. With inflationary pressures easing and the ECB signaling a more measured approach to monetary tightening, the bank expects a more accommodative financial environment to support equity markets. Analysts noted that the combination of lower interest rates and reduced policy uncertainty could further bolster investor sentiment toward eurozone equities.

The upgrade follows a period of underperformance for European equities compared to their U.S. counterparts, as concerns over energy costs, geopolitical risks, and structural challenges weighed on the region’s markets. Barclays’ revised outlook suggests a potential inflection point, though risks such as uneven economic recovery and lingering geopolitical tensions remain.

In a note to clients, Barclays emphasized that while the outlook is improving, the bank’s constructive stance is contingent on sustained economic stabilization and continued corporate earnings growth. The analysts also flagged specific sectors—including financials and consumer discretionary—as areas of particular interest given their sensitivity to macroeconomic trends.
