Swiss fuel prices hit yearly high as Brent tops $100

Swiss fuel prices continued to rise, reaching the highest levels of the year as the renewed escalation of the Iran war pushed pump prices higher. According to the latest figures from the TCS, the average nationwide price for a litre of unleaded 95 was CHF 2.05. Unleaded 98 averaged CHF 2.16 per litre, while diesel cost CHF 2.30 per litre.

Since the start of the year, petrol and diesel prices have increased by around 24% to 29%, bringing them closer to the record levels seen after Russia’s attack on Ukraine in 2022. At that time, unleaded 95 briefly cost more than CHF 2.30 per litre.

The TCS said Swiss fuel prices depend mainly on product prices at the Rotterdam exchange, the value of the US dollar and freight rates for Rhine shipping. Extreme low water levels on the Rhine have recently raised transport costs for fuel deliveries into Switzerland. Experts also cited refinery capacity destroyed by the Iran and Ukraine wars as a factor behind current prices.

No rapid easing was in sight, with crude oil prices rising sharply. A barrel of Brent crude briefly cost more than USD 100 on Wednesday morning, the last time that occurred being in July.
