Canaf subsidiary Quantum acquires South African carbon producer CRS for $1.25 million

Canaf Investments Inc.’s subsidiary Quantum Screening and Crushing completed the acquisition of Carbon Reductant Solutions (CRS) on August 31, 2026. The total consideration was R14.4 million, equivalent to approximately $1.25 million Canadian, comprising roughly R3.5 million for the equity stake and R10.9 million advanced as an intercompany loan to clear CRS’s outstanding liabilities. The purchase was financed entirely from Quantum’s existing cash reserves, with no external debt incurred.

CRS, which began operations in October 2023, manufactures char reductant products used by ferrochrome smelters in South Africa. Its facility is located in the Highveld Industrial Park near eMalahleni and employs a rotary kiln similar to the technology at Quantum’s Newcastle plant in KwaZulu-Natal. The existing operational staff of CRS will be retained, and management aims to finalize integration by the end of October 2026.

Strategically, the acquisition adds production capacity and operational flexibility to Southern Coal, a 70%-owned subsidiary of Quantum, which supplies sinter facilities in the region. The move is intended to position Quantum to benefit from a recovering ferrochrome market.

Market context notes that the reductant market serving South African chrome smelters contracted sharply in 2025 due to closures and curtailments of domestic ferrochrome capacity, which weighed on CRS’s performance and led to accumulated liabilities. In 2026, the South African government, Eskom, and the National Energy Regulator of South Africa introduced electricity‑pricing measures designed to improve the competitiveness of local ferrochrome production. These interventions have supported announced smelter restarts, with further capacity expected to return through 2027.

Christopher Way, chief executive officer of Canaf, commented that the transaction gives Quantum a production platform in Mpumalanga province and "may support opportunities to supply the South African ferrochrome industry as domestic smelting capacity recovers."
