Bio-Rad Shifts Strategy Toward Profitable Growth After Transformation

Bio-Rad Laboratories (BIO) outlined a strategic shift toward profitable growth during a presentation at the Bernstein Healthcare Forum, detailing a multi-year transformation led by CEO Norman Schwartz and a management team assembled over the past two to three years.

The company, which holds a market capitalization of $10.16 billion and trades near its 52-week high at approximately $380, delivered a 39% return over the past six months. Trailing twelve-month revenue stands at $2.59 billion, with a gross profit margin of 52% and a modest revenue growth rate of 1.37%. Management is targeting mid-teens operating margins within the next few years, with a longer-term aim of reaching peer-level margins.

Chief Financial Officer Roop Lakkaraju, who joined in April 2024 from Benchmark Electronics where he served as EVP and CFO since 2018, emphasized the operational focus. "We are operators. We come from environments where we've seen what good looks like, and we understand the work it takes to evolve a company, especially in today's challenging markets," Lakkaraju said.

The transformation includes two major reorganizations announced in February 2025 and Q2 2026. A central component is the June 30, 2024 acquisition of Stilla, which reached profitability within 12 months and has driven double-digit growth over the past three quarters, ranging from low double digits to slightly above 20% in the most recent quarter. Stilla's portfolio includes the QX700 series instruments.

Bio-Rad has revised its M&A strategy, moving away from early-stage technology firms such as Dropworks and Curiosity Diagnostics, which previously led to impairments. The company now targets companies with products already in the market, generally in the $100 million to $500 million revenue range. "We're not interested in buying revenue. We really want to acquire technology that is going to create a further differentiation with our customers when you marry what we already have in terms of capabilities and technology," Lakkaraju stated.

Bio-Rad's digital PCR platform includes an assay library of over 400,000 tests, cited as the largest in the industry, supported by more than 12,000 technical publications. Key applications include rare event detection, oncology, minimal residual disease monitoring, and wastewater management. Diagnostic collaborations to extend digital PCR include partnerships with Biodesix, Gencove, and Insight Molecular.

Regarding its Sartorius stake, established in the late 1990s and early 2000s, management characterized it as a monetizable balance-sheet asset rather than a takeover target, stating Bio-Rad lacks both the ability and interest to acquire Sartorius.

On macro conditions, academic and government funding remains soft globally, with U.S. institutions cautious amid uncertainty around NIH funding deployment. The White House sought further cuts to the 2026 NIH budget while Congress pushed for flat or slightly higher funding. Early-stage biotech spending, particularly in cell and gene therapy, remains weak, though later-stage and commercial-stage biotech shows more resilience. Europe faces weaker government funding as budgets shift toward defense and energy. APAC demonstrates positive momentum outside China and the Nordics. China represents a modest portion of revenue, in the mid-single digits, with greater exposure to diagnostics than tools. Reimbursement changes continued to pressure diabetes products through 2025 after impacting 2024 results.

Bio-Rad shares carry a P/E ratio of 45.78 and trade near an InvestingPro fair value estimate of $394.
