The Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority on Wednesday approved a $19.9 billion upgrade plan for Washington Dulles International Airport, the primary international gateway serving the Washington, D.C. region.
The decade-long program includes a $6.2 billion reconstruction of the main terminal and $3.75 billion allocated for new underground tunnels and replacement of the airport’s aging passenger transport system, known as the People Mover. The People Mover currently ferries travelers between concourses and terminals across the tarmac.
The main terminal rebuild is scheduled to begin in late 2027, while construction on the new tunnels and concourse extensions is set to start in early 2029. The tunnel and concourse project is expected to be completed by 2034, according to the authority’s timeline.
Washington Dulles serves as a major hub for United Airlines (NASDAQ: UAL), which operates a significant portion of its operations from the airport. The upgrades aim to enhance capacity, efficiency, and passenger experience at one of the region’s key aviation facilities.
