Uber Technologies and Zipline announced a partnership to expand drone delivery services for Uber Eats in the United States. The collaboration will integrate Zipline’s autonomous drone technology with Uber’s logistics platform to facilitate faster food deliveries in select cities.
The initiative, slated to launch in 2024, marks a significant step in scaling autonomous last-mile delivery solutions for food orders. Zipline’s fixed-wing drones will operate from designated hubs, enabling direct deliveries to consumers within a 10-mile radius. The drones are designed to carry payloads of up to 4 pounds, covering a range of approximately 50 miles per flight.
Uber Eats, which already offers food delivery via cars, bicycles, and scooters, will incorporate drone logistics to reduce delivery times in urban and suburban areas. The partnership aligns with both companies’ efforts to enhance operational efficiency and meet rising consumer demand for rapid delivery services.
Zipline, a U.S.-based drone delivery startup, has previously deployed its technology in healthcare logistics, including vaccine and medical supply deliveries in Africa and the U.S. The expansion into food delivery represents a strategic diversification of its service offerings.
Financial terms of the partnership were not disclosed. The companies did not specify which cities will be included in the initial rollout, though pilot programs are expected to begin in regions with favorable regulatory frameworks for drone operations.
The collaboration underscores the growing role of autonomous technologies in reshaping last-mile delivery across multiple industries.
