U.S. equities ended mixed on Monday as the Dow Jones Industrial Average climbed 0.26%, while the S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite fell.
The Dow rose 140.15 points to 53,417.16, supported by gains in consumer services, telecommunications and financials. The S&P 500 slipped 21.51 points to 7,652.86, and the Nasdaq Composite declined 0.77% to close at its session low. The CBOE Volatility Index, a measure of market risk, increased 4.69% to 15.84.
Declining stocks outnumbered advancers by 1,408 to 1,303 on the NYSE, while the Nasdaq saw 2,026 decliners against 1,385 gainers. Trading volumes were moderate ahead of Tuesday’s U.S. durable goods orders report.
Among blue-chip components, Visa led gainers with a 3.06% rise to $382.41, followed by Walmart at $106.49 and Walt Disney at $110.61. Technology bellwether NVIDIA fell 2.91% to $208.48, while Caterpillar dropped 2.04% to $811.02 and IBM declined 1.97% to $231.04.
In the S&P 500, Expedia surged 5.44% to $339.13, while Dollar Tree added 4.01% to $136.75. On the downside, Amentum Holdings fell 6.65% to $20.06, Seagate Technology declined 6.51% to $794.65 and Micron Technology dropped 5.87% to $910.01.
The Nasdaq saw extreme moves among smaller-cap names, including a 306.10% surge for CID HoldCo to $1.73 and an 80.49% gain for Expion360 to $6.20. Conversely, Flash Sports & Media Holdings plummeted 77.20% to $0.22, while First Breach fell 48.62% to $2.05.
Commodities were mixed, with gold futures up 0.53% to $4,705.56 per troy ounce and Brent crude oil down 2.54% to $90.32 per barrel. The U.S. Dollar Index rose 0.20% to 98.93, while the euro held steady against the dollar at 1.17.
