The U.S. economic calendar on Thursday will feature two closely watched indicators: the Philadelphia Fed manufacturing index and initial jobless claims, both scheduled for release at 7:30 a.m. ET.
The Philadelphia Fed index, which gauges manufacturing activity in the district, is projected to decline to 24.1 from 41.4 in July. A reading above zero indicates expansion, though the forecast suggests a moderation in growth momentum. Additional subcomponents of the report, including employment and new orders, will also be monitored for further signals on business conditions.
Initial jobless claims are expected to edge up to 210,000 from 209,000 the prior week, reflecting a stable but slightly elevated labor market. Continuing claims, which measure the number of individuals receiving unemployment benefits, are forecast at 1.79 million, compared with 1.777 million previously. The four-week moving average of claims, currently at 199,000, will provide further context on labor market trends.
Other data points due Thursday include the U.S. leading index, projected to rise 0.1% after a 0.2% decline in June, and a natural gas storage report from the EIA, with inventories expected to increase by 15 billion cubic feet following a 36 billion cubic feet build the prior week.
Treasury auctions will also be in focus, including a 30-year TIPS sale and a 4-week bill offering, with the latter yielding 3.625% in the prior session. The Federal Reserve’s balance sheet total is reported at $6.76 trillion, while reserve balances with the central bank stand at $2.947 trillion.
