U.S. President Donald Trump contacted Apple regarding a proposed name change for Lake Ontario to Lake America on the company’s mapping services.
Interior Secretary Doug Burgum confirmed the outreach during an interview on Fox Business’ Mornings with Maria on Monday, stating that Apple could implement the change "soon." The executive order governing the U.S. Geographic Names Information System applies to domestic maps but does not alter Canadian naming conventions or international references.
The move follows escalating trade disputes between the U.S. and Canada, which have led to reciprocal tariffs on billions of dollars in goods. Google Maps has already updated the lake’s name to Lake America for users in the United States, according to a company statement.
The smallest of the five Great Lakes, Lake Ontario spans the U.S.-Canada border. The proposed name change remains pending final implementation across all platforms.
