U.S. President Donald Trump stated on Tuesday that all naval mines had been detonated or removed from the international waters of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical chokepoint for global oil shipments.
Trump, speaking via Truth Social, said Iran had been notified that any vessel or aircraft placing new mines in the strait would be destroyed. He added that the U.S. Space Force was monitoring "every square inch" of the waterway. "There is a Zero Tolerance policy on mine placement in full force and effect," he wrote.
Provisional data from ship-tracking firm Vortexa showed 5 million barrels of oil per day transiting the strait on Monday. Before regional hostilities escalated, the strait handled more than 20 million barrels daily—about one-fifth of global oil consumption.
The Strait of Hormuz remains a flashpoint despite weeks of de-escalation between Washington and Tehran, which have refrained from direct air strikes on each other’s militaries. Attacks on commercial vessels in the strait have continued as both sides assert control over the maritime corridor.
